63 percent of respondents for 4-day week – introduce 4-day week gradually, e.g. in care – “Reducing working hours is a question of respect for employees”
Vienna (OTS/SK) – A new survey commissioned by the Vienna SPÖ Town Hall Club from the market research institute Matzka shows that the vast majority of respondents would like their working hours to be shortened. SPÖ party leader Andreas Babler emphasized to the SPÖ press service on Friday: “The pressure in working life is increasing, people have less and less free time – family life and health suffer as a result. The survey shows in black and white that a majority of people want shorter working hours. The 4-day week in particular is very popular with almost two thirds of people. For me, a reduction in working hours is a question of respect!” ****
According to the survey, 63 percent are in favor of a 4-day week – support is highest among younger people, women and families with children. 57 percent are in favor of a 32-hour week. “We want to gradually introduce the 4-day week with shortened working hours and full wage compensation – first for particularly tough professions such as nursing,” said the SPÖ leader. The majority of nursing staff cannot imagine staying in their physically and mentally demanding job until they retire. “With shorter working hours, we could keep people in their important – and increasingly important – jobs,” says Babler.
Both employees benefit from a 4-day week because they can work more relaxed and healthier, and companies benefit because employees are demonstrably more productive. This is proven by studies on international pilot projects and also the experiences of companies in Austria that have already implemented the 4-day week. “The last reduction in working hours took place in 1975 under Kreisky. Many of today’s pensioners benefited from the fact that working hours were gradually reduced from 45 to 40 hours from 1970 onwards. Today, almost 50 years later, it is high time that people were finally compensated for some of the increased production power and that they were finally given a little more free time and regeneration. It’s a question of respect!” (End) bj/mb
