Hoboken –
A 53-year-old Portuguese man died in an accident at an industrial estate in Hoboken on Tuesday. The Antwerp Labor Audit Office confirms this. The man fell from a great height.
The fatal accident happened around 11:50 am on the sites of Smulders Projects, a manufacturer of, among other things, steel towers for wind turbines on Leo Bosschartlaan in Hoboken. A Portuguese man (53) was working in a wind turbine shaft together with a colleague. He worked for a subcontractor who installs the electrical cabling in the wind turbines.
At some point things went wrong. “The victim fell from a height of 10 to 15 meters,” says Van Asch. The Antwerp Zone Fire Brigade and medical services arrived on the scene, but assistance could no longer help. The man died on the spot.
It is not yet clear how the accident could have happened. The labor prosecutor opened an investigation. “The laboratory arrived on site, as did the inspection service for the Supervision of Welfare at Work. This will check whether there have been any violations of occupational safety legislation,” says Van Asch. “The victim’s colleagues are being cared for by the police victim care department.”
