Emma Coronel plans to resume clothing line after release from jail
Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of Joaquín Guzmán Loera, alias El Chapo, is planning to resume her clothing line after being released from jail. According to her lawyer, Mariel Colón Miró, Coronel is set to focus on her clothing business upon completion of her legal proceedings.
Background
Emma Coronel was incarcerated in the minimum-security FMC Carswell in Fort Worth, Texas, from where she was recently released. Prior to being sent to jail, Coronel was already working on her clothing line, El Chapo Guzman: JGL, LLC, which was set to launch in April 2019. The clothing line was meant to support the Mexican economy and create jobs, but was put on hold due to Coronel’s legal issues.
Clothing line as a business venture
Coronel’s clothing line is not the first time that the Guzmán family has delved into the fashion industry. In 2019, Alejandrina Gisselle Guzmán, daughter of Joaquín Guzmán, launched the clothing and accessories brand, Chapo 701, named after the position in Forbes magazine’s list where El Chapo’s fortune was estimated in 2009. The brand, which was launched in the IM Intermoda Mexico exposition in Guadalajara, showcased items such as jackets, coats, handbags, and belts, but its website appears to no longer be accessible as of 2023.
Looking Ahead
It will be interesting to see how Emma Coronel’s clothing line will fare in the market given its controversial associations. Nonetheless, the focus on supporting the Mexican economy and creating jobs is commendable. As Coronel reunites with her daughters and resumes her life outside prison, it remains to be seen how much impact she can make in the fashion industry.
