Roermond – Iwona R. (41) and Woitek C. (42), Poles, were sentenced on Thursday to nineteen years in prison for the fatal robbery of beekeeper Henk Hoeben (59) in Weert, reports De Limburger. The prison sentence is less than the requirement. Justice had asked for 22 years in prison.
The Court considers it proven that the bee-man was killed to hide a robbery by the two Poles. Henk Hoeben was beaten, intoxicated, strangled and robbed in his own home on the night of July 7 to 8, 2022. After the robbery, the perpetrators set fire to Hoeben’s house to erase traces of the robbery.
“The victim was robbed in his own home by two people, one of whom had known Henk for years. You abused your trust,” the court said. Iwona R. has worked for Hoeben since 2009. She also lived on the property, in a trailer. Police investigations revealed that Hoeben had paid the Polish woman 15,000 euros after she convinced him that she could not pay a fine in her home country. The robbery occurred shortly after the beekeeper informed her that he no longer wanted to give her the money.
Police found the victim in his bedroom. He was tied to his legs with a dog leash with two telephone cords around his neck. Toxicological research indicates chloroform in the beekeeper’s brain and lung tissue. Further investigation showed that the bee-man was intoxicated with chloroform, after which he died from strangulation.

Both guilty
De Limburger reports that during the trial it was not clear which of the two had actually strangled Hoeben. Camera images showed that a violent fight occurred between the bee-man and his attackers. According to the court, the two remained in the house for at least two hours. During that time everything was turned upside down in search of loot. “Since both suspects were present in the house, both are also guilty,” the court said.
Some of the loot, including laptops, a cordless saw and a USB stick, was later sold in Poland. Woitek C., a hooligan with a criminal record, admitted during the criminal hearing that he had often pawned items that the Polish woman had stolen from her boss at a pawn shop, according to De Limburger.
According to the court, qualified manslaughter is one of the most serious crimes and requires a severe punishment.
