Nikki Haley, Donald Trump’s last remaining Republican challenger, has requested Secret Service protection. The reason is that she is receiving an increasing number of threats.
“If you run for president, you will receive threats. That’s just the reality,” Haley told the Wall Street Journal. “But it won’t deter me.” The 52-year-old woman is a former UN ambassador and governor of South Carolina. Local police are always present during her events.
It is not said exactly how many threats are involved. There is a known incident of so-called ‘swatting’. This is a criminal act in which emergency services are called and sent to a location where nothing is wrong at all. She was not at home at the time of the incident, but her elderly parents and a caregiver were.
The legislation in the United States states that Secret Service protection can be granted to “major candidates who have a high probability of becoming a presidential candidate for their party.” As a former president, Donald Trump receives lifelong Secret Service protection.
In the past, Barack Obama, among others, also requested protection from the Secret Service. He raised security concerns as he campaigned to become the first black president of the United States.
