Last year two films dominated cinema: “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer”. The hype surrounding the films was enormous. Fans watched them one after the other, even if it meant spending a total of almost five hours in the cinema. With “Barbenheimer” a separate term was even created for the phenomenon.
It’s no surprise that both films were nominated for multiple Oscars. “Oppenheimer” can hope for one of the coveted awards in 13 categories, while “Barbie” has eight chances in the Oscar race.
But after the announcement of the nominations, especially fans of Greta Gerwig’s film reacted with indignation. This depends on which major categories the film is not nominated for. However, many people find it equally scandalous why “Barbie” ultimately received its Oscar nominations.
Oscar 2024: “Barbie” loses the main categories
The Oscar nominees were announced on Tuesday in Los Angeles. Actor Jack Quaid and his co-star Zazie Beetz have announced who could hope to win one of the coveted awards this year.
From the German point of view there was two positive news: Sandra Hülser was nominated for best actress for her role in “Anatomy of a Case”. And “The Teacher’s Room” is in the running for the foreign Oscar.
But “Barbie” caused the biggest controversy after the announcement. The film does not appear in two important categories.
Neither Margot Robbie is nominated for “Best Actress” nor is Greta Gerwig nominated for “Best Director.” Instead, “Barbie” is nominated for costume design, best adapted screenplay and production design. Satirical comedy can also hope for the most important category: Barbie could be named “best film”.

AND: Starring Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera, “Barbie” is at least represented in the best supporting actor category. But this is precisely what is causing a lot of dissatisfaction among fans. On X they express their anger with sometimes clear words.
“America and Ryan absolutely deserve their nominations, but not nominating Margot when she’s literally Barbie is crazy,” one person wrote on Barbie would be nothing without her. “I’m beyond pissed,” says another indignantly.
Wdym Ryan got more nominations for Barbie while Margot got ZERO. Barbie would be NOTHING without her. I’m beyond pissed.

And another fan writes: “I refuse to believe we live in a world where Margot Robbie isn’t nominated for an Oscar for Barbie.”
Ryan Gosling was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Ken, which is fine.
However, Margot Robbie wasn’t nominated for her starring role in Barbie and “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig also left empty-handed.
Absolutely ridiculous in my opinion! pic.twitter.com/X6LRHLIoR8

Ryan Gosling also commented on the situation: “I am incredibly honored and proud to be nominated for an Oscar for the role of Ken. But there is no Ken without Barbie and there is no “Barbie” movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie. They are the ones most responsible for this historic and world-acclaimed film.”
The statement continues: “To say that I am simply disappointed that they were not nominated in their respective categories is an understatement! They managed to break our hearts and also make us laugh with a couple of soulless, scantily clad and thankfully genderless dolls. His work, which made pop culture history, deserved to be recognized.”
But he is happy for “America Ferrera and the other artists who contributed their talent to the creation of such an innovative film.”
The fans are angry with the Academy
One thing in particular worries many fans: with Ryan Gosling’s nomination, the film’s male protagonist may now receive more recognition than the female one. “I wasn’t as interested in Barbie as others, but seeing that a movie about how women are misperceived in public gets nominated for the male lead and his jokey song and gets awards, but almost the entire female creative team doesn’t it does.” it could turn me into a villain,” one person writes on X.
Another thinks: “How can you name Ken and not Barbie for the movie Barbie. Is this Ken’s movie? Hell no!”
HOW WILL YOU NOMINATE KEN AND NOT BARBIE FOR THE BARBIE MOVIE??!! IS THIS KEN’S MOVIE?? NO FUCK!!!!!!

You have to be a leading lady but you can’t be nominated for best actress. You have to be a strong female director but you cannot be nominated for best director. You must have a very popular dance song but cannot be nominated for Best Original Song. pic.twitter.com/yhlpS4AdTv

“I think the Academy looked at Barbie with their eyes and ears closed,” suspects another person, who obviously doesn’t agree with the nominations at all.
«No Greta Gerwig. No Margot Robbie. But Ryan Gosling. Patriarchy, right?” another asks sarcastically. And one, based on the film itself, simply says: “This Barbie is offended.”
I’m not sure if it’s the Academy’s humor or their anti-feminism, but with the decision to cast Ryan Gosling and not Margot Robbie #Barbie nominated for an Oscar, they captured the humor of the film very well. And we are still destroying the patriarchy. With Margot.

Hillary Clinton also commented on the speech. Addressing Greta and Margot she writes: “Even though it hurts to win at the box office but not take home the gold medal, millions of fans adore you.”
Greta and Margot,
Even though it may hurt to win at the box office but not take home the gold, your millions of fans love you.
You are both so much more than Kenough.#HillaryBarbie

The fact that the film was not considered by the Academy in so many important categories is obviously causing a lot of dissatisfaction among fans. The decision, however, does not come as a total surprise.
The film suffered a major setback at the Golden Globes. Margot Robbie was nominated for best actress, but she left empty-handed. Greta Gerwig also failed to take home the award for best director. Many fans were obviously still hoping that the tide might change at the Oscars.
