A Dutch baby aged less than a year has been killed during an Iranian attack on Iraq. This was reported by outgoing minister Hanke Bruins Slot (Foreign Affairs) on X. Two family members were injured, a ministry spokesperson told NU.nl.

The spokesperson cannot say whether the two injured family members are the parents of the deceased child. Furthermore he cannot say anything about how many Dutch are in Iraq.

It is unclear what the child and the victim’s family were doing in Iraq. The attack took place in Erbil, in the north of the country.

Bruins Slot says it “strongly” condemns the attack. He also spoke about the situation with Iranian authorities. Furthermore, the Iranian ambassador was summoned to The Hague.

“The death of the child and the other civilian victims is terrible, but I also deeply sympathize with the surviving relatives,” the minister wrote. “We are providing consular assistance to the family during this difficult time.”

Iran has carried out attacks against Syria and Iraq

Earlier this week the Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) carried out attacks against Syria and Iraq. The targets were hit in the Erbil area, where the IRGC says the “local headquarters for espionage activities” of the Israeli intelligence service Mossad is located. There is no evidence of this.

Erbil is the capital of the autonomous Kurdish region of Iraq. This means that the area officially falls under Iraq, but has its own Kurdish administration. The American consulate is also located in Erbil.
