Although children with Asperger syndrome often inherit the majority of their genome from their father rather than their mother, there is no clear pattern of which parent inherits autism-related genes.

Publika.az Elena Orekhova, an employee of the MEG center of the Moscow State Psychological and Pedagogical University, said this.

Neurologist Orekhova denied the idea that autism genes are mostly passed on from the father.

“Most forms of autism are a common effect inherited from both the mother and the father. However, there are certain forms in which genes from one parent play a major role. One such form is fragile X syndrome, or Martin-Bell, which is often accompanied by autism. It is more common in boys and is usually transmitted to them from the mother, because the son receives the X chromosome from the mother and the Y chromosome from the father,” Gazeta.Ru quoted him as saying.

According to the expert, there are many genes associated with autism. Although the functions of the genes vary, their disorders affect the functioning of certain areas of the brain that are important for social behavior and communication.

Most of the genes associated with autism start working before a child is born. This happens during the formation of the fetus – in the first or second trimester. They are associated with neurogenesis, the process of nerve cell development in the brain. However, many people have genes associated with autism.

According to the neurologist, the effect of genetic factors is not 100%. Therefore, environmental influences such as premature birth, taking certain medications or infections during pregnancy should be taken into account. If genetic load is added to these factors, the child’s risk of developing autism spectrum disorder (ASD) increases.
