The Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday. “Barbie” was nominated for best picture, but director Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, who plays Barbie, were a disaster.
Many believed that this was clear in the passage of the two women in the most popular film of last year. Some called it misogyny. The omission created a wave of indignation. Social media was flooded with outraged comments.
Ryan Gosling, who plays Ken, was nominated for best supporting actor and best original song for “I’m Just Ken.” America Ferrera is nominated for best supporting role as a human in the world of dolls in “Barbie.”
Gosling told Deadline he was “more than disappointed” that neither Gerwig nor Robbie were nominated for an Oscar:
– There is no Ken without Barbie. There would be no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this world-celebrated historical film, says the actor.
Hillary Clinton, former first lady of the United States, also intervened in the debate. AX, lent her support to Gerwig and Robbie.
Barbie is a toy
One point of appeal against the “Barbie” movie is that it is licensed by toy giant Mattel. Although the film criticizes the patriarchal management of society, according to the BBC it may have contributed to the fact that many in the film academy did not take it seriously.
The film also competes with more serious films such as Robert Oppenheimer’s biographical history.

Comedy rejected
– There is probably still no room for more than one woman in the best direction, says Øyvor Dalan Vik. He reviewed “Barbie” in Dagens Næringsliv and says the comedy is largely underrecognized.
– There are still people who don’t think comedy is that difficult. It’s very rare for a comedy to get Oscar nominations.
Birger Vestmo, film critic at NRK Filmpolitiet, is not among those who are furious that neither Gerwig nor Robbie were nominated.
– “Barbie” was beautiful, lively and funny, with some sharp comments on both the doll phenomenon and the fight against the patriarchy. However, it wasn’t in my personal top 20 of the best films of last year, she tells Aftenposten.
– If we look at those who were actually nominated in the director and actor categories, it’s no wonder that Gerwig and Robbie didn’t make it. Except for Annette Bening’s starring role in “NYAD,” which I haven’t seen. The level is sky high with a series of fantastic results, which are probably even a little stronger than they represented.
However, “Barbie” received a total of eight nominations in other categories, so Vestmo imagines Gerwig and Robbie are pretty happy after all.

Six pink hearts
Bergens Tidende critic Lars Frøyshov gave the film six pink hearts and wrote that Margot Robbie shines like the stereotypical Barbie.
– It’s an irony of fate that in a film about patriarchy it’s Gosling who gets nominated, not Robbie and Gerwig, he says.
– Greta Gerwig would have liked to have received a nomination for best director, but the nominees are very kind. Oscar nominations lead to the usual disappointment and a slight shake of the head. “Even if ‘Barbie’ was fun at heart, I wouldn’t say she deserves nominations more than those who got them,” she points out.
Conservative industry
Dalan Vik says the members of the Academy, which awards the Oscars, are a conservative assembly. Therefore, he believes that not everyone is able to recognize Gerwig’s many cheeky references to film history.
– They are sewn perfectly into the film, he says.
– For some people, political references are difficult to digest, he says and gives an example of when Barbie goes out into the real world:
– Roller skate past a group of festively dressed women. – The supreme court? Barbie asks. At the time, the U.S. Supreme Court had just struck down the right to self-directed abortion.
Dalan Vik believes that Margaret Robbie plays Barbie with good timing, but that the nominees are the ones most deserving of “best leading role”. You haven’t seen “NYAD” with Annette Benings.
