The Jewel that Barcelona Let Go and Now Costs 50 Million
FC Barcelona has made several mistakes in its modern history. While the most notable one is its mismanagement with the departure of Lionel Messi in 2021 and his subsequent failed return in 2023, the truth is that the Catalan team has also been known for developing talented footballers and then letting them go for no apparent reason.
In some cases, like those of Cesc Fabregas or Jordi Alba, they had to bring them back for large sums of money. However, there were others whose market value skyrocketed to the point where it became impossible to bring them back. In this latter group, we find a player who has recently excelled in a top European league and whose price seems unattainable for Barcelona given their current financial situation.
His name is Xavi Simons. The Dutchman was once the face and captain of Barcelona’s youth divisions for many years, but the club took too long to offer him a professional contract. As a result, the talented footballer decided to join PSG. However, he struggled to settle in France and eventually signed with PSV, where he found his best form and even became the top scorer in the last Eredivisie season.
How Much is Xavi Simons Worth?
The young Dutch soccer player, who represented the Netherlands in the Qatar World Cup 2022, finished the league season with 19 goals and eight assists. Although he couldn’t secure the title (he ended up as the runner-up with Feyenoord), his outstanding individual performance caught the attention of several top clubs across Europe. PSV has already set a price tag of 50 million euros for him.
