The semester break is starting and for many Austrian families that means: off to a skiing holiday! The ARBÖ shows what needs to be taken into account when transporting skis in a car.
Vienna (OTS) – The semester break is just around the corner in Vienna, Lower Austria and Vorarlberg, and the remaining federal states will follow suit in the following weeks. “Off to the slopes!” is the motto for many children, young people and adults who love winter sports. The ARBÖ gives tips for the safe and correct transport of skis and snowboards in the car.
The safest way to transport winter sports equipment is on the roof. It is therefore worth investing in an appropriate transport system, such as a roof box or ski rack. The ARBÖ recommends seeking advice before purchasing.
Roof box
Roof boxes offer plenty of storage space, so other items of luggage can also be transported in them and there is more space for passengers. However, the maximum payload according to the manufacturer’s instructions must be observed. The skis or snowboards are safe and well protected while driving. Roof boxes are often expensive to purchase.
Ski carrier
Ski racks are easy to mount on base racks using a magnet system and can be stored to save space until the next use. However, unlike roof boxes, they do not offer any additional storage space for luggage.
Both transport options increase air resistance, which leads to increased fuel consumption. The car’s center of gravity shifts due to the load, so be sure to adjust your driving behavior and speed. In addition, the air pressure in the tires should be adjusted to the higher vehicle weight before departure.
Transporting skis indoors is not advisable due to the razor-sharp edges of the sports equipment, which can become life-threatening projectiles in the event of an accident. The equipment can only be transported indoors if an appropriate hatch is available. If the vehicle equipment is transported inside the vehicle, it is recommended that it be covered and tied down well to reduce the risk of injury from the edges.
Regardless of the transport method, the following applies: secure the load sufficiently to withstand all driving maneuvers (including emergency braking or evasive maneuvers). “We recommend checking three times whether the systems are seated correctly and securely: after assembly, after loading and after approximately 1,000 kilometers of driving. If something is loose, simply tighten the holders of the carriers, box or even the tension straps,” says ARBÖ press spokesman Sebastian Obrecht.
Incorrect transport of ski resort equipment can lead to legal problems. Improper transport can result in fines of up to €10,000 and a warning offense will be recorded in the driving license register. Further travel can also be prohibited.
