The EU Parliament plans to make driving license suspensions valid throughout the EU in the future. This project has met with criticism from the ARBÖ.
Vienna (OTS) – The EU Parliament has passed a law proposal that would make certain offenses such as drunk driving, speeding or fatal accidents punishable by driving license revocation throughout the EU. This would mean that the driving license revocation would also be valid throughout the EU, and drivers would no longer be allowed to drive throughout the European Union. This plan has met with criticism from the ARBÖ, as KommR Mag. Gerald Kumnig explains: “The penalties vary greatly in the individual countries. Why should Austrian car drivers be punished throughout the EU, including Austria, for something that is not a crime here? For example, the proposal plans to allow driver’s licenses to be revoked in the future for speeding by 30 km/h, although in Austria revocation is only possible from 40 km/h.’
Another point of criticism is the large number of offenses that are to be covered by the new regulation: “It is rumored that the list of offenses to which the EU-wide driving license revocation should apply is to be expanded. The aim is to restrict individual mobility and make it unattractive through EU regulations. We will work to ensure that the legislation and enforcement of offenses continue to be regulated on a national basis,” concludes Kumnig.
