American Man Arrested for Alleged Attack on Tourists Near Neuschwanstein Castle

Berlin: An American man has been apprehended as the accused assailant of two American tourists near Neuschwanstein Castle in southern Germany, resulting in the tragic death of one of them, as per authorities’ statement on Thursday.

The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon in close proximity to the renowned tourist destination. Specifically, it transpired near the Marienbruecke, a famous bridge overlooking Neuschwanstein providing a breathtaking view.

According to the police, the 30-year-old man crossed paths with the two tourists, aged 21 and 22, on a trail and enticed them towards a path leading to a picturesque spot.

The suspect physically assaulted the younger woman, announced the police. When her companion attempted to intervene, he strangled her and threw her down a steep hillside.

Subsequently, it appears that the assailant also attempted to sexually assault the 21-year-old before flinging her down the hillside. The victim fell approximately 50 meters (165 feet) and landed in close proximity to her friend.

Both women were promptly rescued by the mountain retrieval service. While the 22-year-old responded to treatment and was transported to a hospital, the gravely injured 21-year-old had to be airlifted and unfortunately succumbed to her injuries overnight.

The perpetrator fled the scene but was apprehended shortly thereafter. An online video, captured by an individual, depicts a man dressed in a T-shirt, jeans, and a baseball cap being escorted away in handcuffs by the police.

The police confirmed that the man was an American tourist, and the prosecutors stated the same for both women, with the 22-year-old still receiving medical care.

The authorities have refrained from disclosing the identities of the suspect and victims or providing any further details at this stage.

As per German legislation, if investigators intend to keep suspects in custody, they must be presented before a judge in seclusion before the end of the operational day following their arrest.

Police reported that a judge in the nearby town of Kempten ordered the suspect’s detention pending charges, a process that could span several months, and he was subsequently incarcerated. The accusations against him include murder, attempted murder, and sexual assault.

The police are currently reconstructing the incident and encouraging potential witnesses to come forward.
