The Kyiv Post newspaper published a video clip showing members of the Ukrainian special forces interrogating fighters from the Russian Wagner special forces in Sudan.
The video, reported by the British newspaper The Guardian, shows Ukrainian soldiers from the special forces inspecting military vehicles bearing the “Wagner” logo on their seats.
Wagner was the most ardent enemy of the Ukrainian forces in the Russian attack that began in February 2022, before its influence in this war diminished with the killing of its commander, Yevgeny Prigozhin, in August last year.
But it seems that the two sides have found a new battlefield in Sudan, according to the Kyiv Post newspaper, which published details of a dialogue between a Ukrainian soldier and militants, including a Wagner fighter, while it did not reveal his location inside Sudan.
“What is your rank?” the Ukrainian soldier asks one of the blindfolded militants, who admits that he belongs to the “Wagner” forces.
Then the Ukrainian soldier asks: “What is the goal?”, and the “Wagner” fighter answers: “Overthrowing the local government.” Then the Ukrainian soldier asks again: “How many of you are here?”, and the other responds: “100 people.”
After withdrawing most of its forces from Ukraine, Wagner began focusing its military activities on African countries, which are believed to include Sudan.
Sources within the Ukrainian special forces told the Kyiv Post newspaper: “Ukrainian forces are likely to eliminate Wagner and their partners in Sudan. The work we planned in Sudan is being implemented.”
Although the authenticity of the video has not been verified by an independent source, it appeared after months of speculation that Ukrainian forces were operating in Sudan as part of a campaign launched by Kiev to strike Russian interests away from the war that has been going on in Ukraine for two years.
