The 2023 Formula One Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix won the Innovation Award during the Formula One Championship Awards Ceremony for the circuits that host its rounds. The ceremony was held in the British capital, London, and honors the major achievements achieved by Formula One circuits around the world, as Bahrain received the Award A number of pioneering innovations have been introduced over the past twelve months, including major sustainability initiatives as well as technological developments in areas including race control and traffic management.
The awards are judged and judged by Formula One, the commercial rights holder for the sport, and the categories are open to participation from all Formula One circuits from around the world, with a shortlist of three circuits announced prior to the awards ceremony, and the award being received on behalf of the Bahrain International Circuit. The Innovation Award was presented at the ceremony to the Formula One circuits that demonstrated the most important innovations in race delivery, commercial product display or infrastructure. Upon announcing the victory of the 2023 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix, the jury was evaluated after the race adopted a number of key innovations in the circuit. Bahrain International, including:
• Leading solar energy production facility at the Bahrain International Circuit: In its first year of operation, the solar energy facility at the Bahrain International Circuit produced more than 5 million kilowatt-hours of energy, which is enough renewable energy to cover all Formula One uses with significant reserve capacity, i.e. Equivalent to offsetting 3,108 tons of carbon.
• Innovative energy saving measures: In 2023, BIC has taken a number of measures to reduce energy consumption. This has included a new building management system that monitors and manages efficient lighting and air conditioning, upgrading more efficient air conditioning chillers and replacing all facility lighting with energy efficient lamps. More than 30% of energy usage has been saved over the course of the year.
• Innovative technology in race surveillance: In 2023, the Bahrain International Circuit adopted the installation of the first system of its kind in the world that connects digital flag boards on the track to race surveillance cameras – where the selected camera automatically highlights the flagged area in the circuit, and this provides Race control officials have a critical time when looking into accidents.
• Electronic services: The Bahrain International Circuit provided electronic directional signs for fans arriving at the circuit, allowing for better proactive and effective traffic management, resulting in an overall reduction in traffic queues and alleviating the need to print temporary directional sign announcements.
